Mystic Soul Journeys

Journeys through the realms of the spirit have been characterized as shamanic journeys, astral travel, traveling inward, mesmerism, and a variety of other terms. One of my first formal introductions of cultural descriptions was years ago in a book called The Way of the Shaman by Michael Harner. Mr. Harner was an anthropologist that suggested that shaman healers the world over traveled into the spirit world to affect change within that would affect reality in the physical realm. He went on to say that they all made these travels in congruent ways using portals and spirit guides.

When I used his method of induction my journey began instantly and I was able to easily make the transition. It was not long before I no longer needed the drum beat. Never stopped to wonder why it was so easy from the start. A question I have only recently asked myself.

That was over 25 years ago. After I have learned a variety ways to travel these realms, I have learned to guide others into their own portals. It is almost always successful and easy for them to make the flight. The reason I guide them is for healing. Just the other day I discovered that some call this method "Shamanic Soul Retrieval". That is the term in the holistic world. So there is that word shaman again.

In Taoism there is no special word when the process is described in The Secret of the Golden Flower.

The journeys that I now facilitate in people do not require drugs, or drum beats, or really any particular object other than maybe a comfortable seat and a peaceful space.

After a fair amount of experience I have learned to no longer see myself as a healer. But rather as a facilitator of the person's own healing energy. It is not really up to me, and when I don't try to force things, and the more I allow, the more powerfully their healing moves. They usually think it was me, but really it isn't. Their own heart is their spirit guide. The heart, the intuition, the higher self, the part of us that the modern culture tells us is irrational and weak, our soul, is the true guide and healer of ourselves. It is powered by love and compassion.

Why was the journey so easy? I recently realized that it may be more of a natural process that it appears on the surface. Maybe the path of the journey was the way things were meant to be from the start for humanity. Maybe it was always the way before our cleverness and overthinking created chatter so loud that it was easy to forget. Easy to forget until enough pain brings the change that can bring the healing.
